Alligences 1 – Getting the drop
by HoD Ro' Matlh
Rene swept the cargo pod ladder with her disruptor rifle. No movement. She glanced at Karla who shook her head.
“The reader says he is down there somewhere. We should be right on top of him.”
Rene lowered her self down the ladder, sweeping the rifle back and forth till she reached the first cargo pod door. Karla dropped down beside her and cycled the opening. The door swung inwards and Rene stepped through sweeping her rifle over the assortment of crates and boxes. Karla followed, he own hand disruptor next to the scanner so she could watch both at the same time.
“We are close,” She said, giving the scanner a shake.
There was a soft noise behind her as Jared dropped from the roof onto the floor and rolled out the door.
“Rene!” She called firing at the empty doorway.
Rene spun as well as the door swung shut and the lock cycled closed. The two women rushed to the door.
“Open it!” Rene bellowed.
“I can’t. The umbilical is gone.”
There was a clunk and the lights flickered for a moment. Both women felt an odd fluttering in their stomach.
“We’ve been cut loose. We’re in free fall.”
The two women stared at each other for a frozen moment.
“Let’s not panic,” Rene began. We are over Seraphis, which is mostly water. The Pods are rated for Atmos-Drop…”
“Not with live cargo they’re not!’ Karla wailed.
Rene took a deep breath, “Look, provided the cargo is all secure, and we can hold on during re-entry, and the heat shields work and the retro chutes fire when they are supposed to and we manage to hit one of the oceans…”
Karla continued, “The main doors will automatically open pouring water that our pod has flashed boiled into the hold. We will have less than three minutes to get out through the searing water to reach the surface before the Pod sinks forever.”
Rene placed her rifle over her shoulder, “And then we just have to hope we are close enough to a land mass or a shipping route to get picked up.”
Karla clung on as her feet began to lift off the floor.
