Marla and Ro' were back in their cell for the time being. Marla was getting slightly annoyed, and with what she was feeling now she probably could shoot someone, but she tried to control herself, and let her human half take control for now. How could Petri be both Prosecutor and Defense? Was that even allowed? She looked to Ro' to see if she could devise what he was thinking. She couldn't do it. He had a great poker face unless he was really drunk, and they don't give you alcohol in prison, so that is what he wasn't.
"May I ask what you are thinking, sir?"
Ro' growled, "I am thinking that we have stumbled on some serious issue. Those symbols of House Matlh were legtimate. Those weapons are being moved without notifying Haqtaj or myself. Why would that number of weapons be moved in secrecy. They are not going to the Fleet, so where are they going."
The door opened and Petri entered, followed by Marie. He smiled warnly as the guard opened the cell, "Congratulations, Captain. You are now a free man. You and your crew may return to your ship and, as soon as thee court costs are paid you will be on your way."
"Court costs?" Ro' growled. "We were found inocent. WHy are we being charged costs?"
Petri's smile never wavered, "Yes, you were and even awarded compensation by waving of all traiffs associated with your extended stay here in our landing bay. However my personal engagement was supplementary to the standard for representation and is still outstanding. It was negotiated by a member of your crew who assured me, in front of witnesses, that she had authority to broker approrpriate fiscal recompense."
Ro's eyes furrowed, "What?"
Petri's smile flickered for a moment, "Your Beq St Helene assured me you would pay the toll before your ship was released."
Ro's glowered, "Marie does have my authority to make purchases on behalf of the ship. How much did she agree to?"
Petri told him. Ro' exploded with a string of venacular that even Marla had not heard. Marie visibly flinched. She knew what was coming and didn't like the prospect one bit. "That is the price of a large frieghter! Where am I supposed to find that sort of money?"
Petri shrugged, I am sure I could not advise you on financial matters. I suggest you work that out for yourselves. As I said, you are free to return to your ship now."
“I had to do something,” Marie pleaded. “What was I going to do, let you rot in here? As it is, I don’t know where Jared, Hope or Hay’legh are. Only Klingons were arrested but they’re nowhere on Ubatti as best as I can make out. I only escaped because I was off doing your bidding at the time. The whole thing was a disaster. I sought out contacts, pulled in favours and built up a good deal more that will have to be paid off sometime. I was left with only one reasonable option. I could have blown up the gaol and freed you but that didn’t seem reasonable. We might have made it to the FHew but I doubt we would’ve escaped Ubatti space in one piece. No, I had to do a deal and get the best from it that I could. Believe me, if I had’ve chosen the ‘blowing up the gaol’ option it would’ve cost a lot more. A hell of a lot more!”
Ro' held up his hand, "I am not disappointed in your actions, Ne'. In fact I am pleasantly surprised you are still with us. I would have thought that you would have run for the nearest transport, what with all the Rentar Spices you have stashed in the computer core."
He smiled evilly at her shocked experession, "Oh, yes I have known about it. The FHew is my ship and my home for half a century. There is nothing I do not know about her, no secret space I have not explored. But even selling off the goods we have we cannot hope to break even."
"Can we take up a cargo job and pay it off?" one of the Beqs asked.
Ro' snorted, "Not unless we find a shipment of refined Latinum for free we can sell. The Price of teh FHew herself would barely cover the cost. For now, let's get back to the ship."
