Bugging Out – Stow-Away
by Ne' Michelle "Mike" Young & Soghla' Terri (Tell) Hope
They were lucky. The hotel front desk was minutes away from closing for the night when the two of them arrived. The hotel wasn't the best, but it certainly wasn't the worst that Mike had ever stayed in. She had made sure to get a room with two beds, she had had a feeling that Tell did not want to be on her own tonight.
"Let's get some sleep. We can deal with whatever else comes in the morning when it comes." Mike places a hand on Tells shoulder. "You can relax. He will never find you or hurt you again."
"Thanks." replied Tell "I don't know what would have happened to me if you hadn't come along. I've been such an idiot. Why couldn't I have seen it happening? I'll never trust another man again thats for sure."
Tell yawned and rubbed her eyes. Michelle had given her a light sedative to help her sleep and a painkiller. She was still sore all over from the brutal attack by Garrat just a few hours ago. So much had happened that night and the memory of it would affect her for a long time.
"I have to learn how to fight." she mumbled before her eyes closed.
Mike makes sure that Tell was well and truly asleep before double checking that everything was locked and settling down herself. She was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
Tell woke up suddenly, drenched in sweat and for a moment she couldn't recall where she was. She thought she was back in Garrat's flat lying injured and up against the wall. It took a while for her to realise that she was in a hotel sharing a room with her rescuer. She was safe for now.
She heard the shower going in the bathroom, Michelle was up and about early and then Tell remembered that they were leaving today for good.
She got up and wandered over to the mirror, there were no signs of the terrible injuries that had been inflicted upon her. She felt stiff and a little sore still but that would go in time.
The bathroom door opened and Michelle stood there smiling at her.
Mike was dressed in her Starfleet uniform, with her brand new Lieutenant pips on her collar.
"Sleep well?' Mike asks.
"Fine thanks." Tell nodded, she felt much better and the aches and pains were subsiding even if the memory wasn't. She had to be positive now and try and move on with the rest of her life and put the past behind her.
"That uniform looks good on you." she told Mike
"Thankyou." Mike smiled. "You mentioned last night you wanted to learn how to defend yourself." Mike looks at the time for a moment. "We still have a few hours till the shuttle leaves, would you like me to teach you some basics?"
Tell dressed as quickly as she could she wasn't about to turn Michelles offer down. If they only had a couple of hours she wanted to make the most of it.
"I'm ready" she replied "She flexed her muscles which obeyed her commands with out complaint and waited for Michelle to start.
"First things first." Mike said. "Defence." Mike showed Tell the basics of defending from blows, and slowly increased the pace as Tell got to know the moves more.
"I really appreciate this," Tell told her feeling a little more confident with what she was doing. "Thank you so much."
"It's not a problem. I have my grading coming up, so it's good practise for me." Mike smiles. "And I am happy to teach you on the starship on the way to base if you like."
"That would be great thanks. Do you know what your new ship looks like?"
"It's a Nobel class, a hospital ship. I'll be heading the medical department apparently." Mike seems to be beaming now. "Oh, one thing. Have you ever been in a shuttle leaving orbit before?"
"Never, though I'm looking forward to it. Why is there a problem with that?" Asked Tell wondering if she had to have some kind of certificate that said she was space worthy enough.
"No, no problem." Mike replied. "Just not everyone can cope with the changes in pressure and such. I know a number of people that never adjust. Most just get nauseous, and some are occasionally sick."
"I have no choice," Tell told her feeling a little worried and smiled easily at her friend "But I'm sure I'll be fine after all I've been through much worse just lately."
Mike grins. "We shall see, we shall see." Mike looks at the time. "Well, that lesson went rather quickly, we had best get going or I'll miss my flight!"
Tell picked up her things which wasn't very much at all but it included the violin that her brother Jamie had made for her a long time ago. "I'm going to have to buy some clothes soon. I haven't anything to wear but what I'm standing in."
"Oh, right! I almost forgot." Mike reaches into her bag and pulls out a parcel. "I know I probably shouldn't have, but I do see a lot of me in you, so I got this for you." Mike hands it too her.
She undid the parcel and took out black trousers and top with a boiled wool jacket in burnt orange. It was lovely and Tell wasted no time in getting changed. "You shouldn't have." said Tell enjoying the look "How much do I owe you? I can pay you back when I get a job."
"You owe me nothing except for making sure you start a new life, where you are meant to be." Mike smiles. "Come on, we have a shuttle to catch." Mike picks up her bags and heads for the door.
Spaceport Tycondarova
Tell had never seen anywhere so busy before. Lots of people were coming and going. Some civilian and others in smart Starfleet uniforms. Shuttles landed and took off right before her eyes. She was excited and nervous at the same time to be in among the activity going on here. Her eyes darted everywhere and to everything.
"Come on, it's over this way." Mike heads towards one of the many shuttle platforms lining the outskirts of the spaceport. "Try not to look concerned, I'll get you on board with me."
Tell didn't say anything and tried to look as ordinary as possible. "Are you sure its ok. I don't want you getting into trouble or anything because of me."
"It's no trouble taking my NIECE anywhere." Mike smiles. "Trust me, this will work."
"Ok Aunty Michelle."
They both make their way through the crowd towards the shuttle. Mike stops in front of of one of the many shuttles. An Ensign was standing in front of the door with a PADD, checking off names as she approaches.
"Ah, Lieutenant Young, I was wondering when you were arriving." He checks her name off and looks at Tell. "You on the other hand have no business being here, please leave."
"She's my niece, I'm the only family she has now. Her parents died not too long ago in an accident and left notice for me to look after her and help her enter Starfleet Academy." Mike pauses for a moment. "Is that going to be an issue, Ensign?"
The Ensign was rather taken back at the tone Mike used and took a step back. "Oh...Ummm....I don't...." He pauses for a moment to gather himself. "No...I don't think so....Give me a moment to check."
"Take as long as you need." Mike waits patiently.
A few minutes pass, and the Ensign turns back to her. "Well, looks like we had a seat spare, so that won't be an issue this time."
"Thank you. We can sort ourselves now." Mike and Tell enter the shuttle.
Tell smiled at him hoping to look friendly but the Ensign watched her with a scowl on his face. His day just kept getting better and better.
The shuttle was smaller than normal. Mike took two seats nearer to the door, as befitting her rank, and stowed their bags on the lockers available.
"Sit down, I'll strap you in." Mike says to Tell.
Tell found she couldn't say anything, she was so excited. So much had happened in the last twenty four hours. However so small there was a lingering doubt that crept into her mind.
"You hear such stories going around, it is safe isn't it?" asked Tell
"It is yes, I haven't had a single issue with these since joining Starfleet. It can be a rough ride and you may feel sick." Mike points to something next to Tell's chair. "If you are sick, use that."
Mike sits down and straps herself in. "Shouldn't be long now."
Minutes later, the engines started and the shuttle shock as it lifted off the ground and headed for the ship awaiting above.
