Forgotten Glory – Working it out
by HoD Ro' Matlh & Ensign Israna Haan
Israna wasn't particularly hungry, she just wanted to look out the window. Space, all there was was space. Well, space and planet really, as they were currently passing one.
"Well, I am a scout now. I have to be ready for whatever is thrown at me, I suppose. Anything to get out of this ship." She sighed, "Hope your proud, mother."
Two Klingons came in while she stood there. One nudged the other and pointed to the Trill, "'IwHom chu'."
"English", the other growled without laughing.
After a few minutes staring out of the window into the gloomy depths of space, her stomach growled. Walking over to the food replicator and ordered chicken soup in a mug, before walking out, sipping the hot liquid slowly. She made a face as she drank it.
"Ugh!" She couldn't take the taste anymore and spat it out at the nearest sink. "This doesn't even TASTE CLOSE to chicken soup! Tastes like lentils and cabbage with bits of..... Whatever those bits are..."
This did cause both Klingons to laugh. Israna heard them laugh and shot back a death stare. The two Klingon's stopped laughing straight away. She went to the armory, but was denied. "Damn. I need a code....I'll go and see Ro'."
Israna went to where she originally was with the crew at the briefing. Ro' was standing there, looking at plans on the wide table.
"Captain."
Ro' looked up, then straightened, "Ensign? Did you want something?"
Israna hesitated. When he turned around and she saw his face, she froze. The flashback of that day, that night... The fire... Her parents screaming and falling to the ground... Her sister trying to help.... Family... Dying.... And there horrid faces with their dirty beards and sweaty skin.
'His face.... His face reminds me of them... That day...'. Before Israna knew what she was doing, she went for her knife slowly and pulled it out...
Ro' looked at the knife and then back at the Starfleet officer. He recognized the look in her eyes, and the danger she represented, but he did not move for his own weapon. The table separated them and she would need to get past it to get to him.
"Are you looking for an early promotion, Ensign?" he asked.
Israna realized what she was doing and dropped her knife before she lunged at him and backed away slowly.
"I am sorry, Captain. I..... I don't know what came over me...."
She had the look of sadness in her eyes, almost as if she was about to cry in horror of her reaction...
"Can....." Israna swallowed dryly. Her voice was shaky. She looked like she could kill herself at any moment with the way her body language was... "Can I have the code for the Armory? I need a full camouflage armor suit and a visor helmet. Preferably with a tracker, radar and scanner. Can never be too careful...."
Ro' nodded, "Security code is 335. You are now in charge of all personal weapons and armour in that locker. Make sure there is a gun and a HEVA suit for every person on the ship. We have none of the sophisticated armour you re looking for. It tends to fail after a few days of being dragged through mud and battle, but Starfleet have sent your kit, including your outfit and a Tye IIIb Phaser rifle. Get Marie to show you where she stashed it before she finds someone to sell it to."
Ro' went back to looking at the plans. Israna just stood there. After a moment he looked up again, "Was there something else?"
"Aren't you going to attack me? I just threatened you slightly? Your species usually attacks anything that moves, let alone threat you..... So why am I still standing?"
Ro' sighed, "Yes, and we eat children and worship dark gods. If I attacked any of my crew that pulled a knife I wouldn't have crew left. I am over fifty years old, and I got that way by being very careful who I attacked and who I did not. One thing you learn to judge is how much of a threat your opponent is."
He pulled his D'k'tahg knife from his belt and, walking around the table, passed it to her, hilt first.
"You want to pull a knife on a Klingon? Do it. I am unarmed. There are no witnesses. You can say it was self defense."
Israna grabbed the knife, and it was heavy... She looked at it.
"I could kill you right here, after all, I was trained to kill, let alone scout, but took it too far. I let it consume me, as well as my anger and hatred of your kind. I vowed for revenge, and that attitude got me through the Academy like a breeze." Israna looked up at Ro' to meet his curious eyes. "Now, I am a lethal killing machine.... I could stab you multiple times, cut your throat wide open, and make you fall without making a sound.... Without alerting your crew... And no one would save you.... I would get my revenge...."
Israna thought for a moment and breathed heavily, tightening her grasp on the hilt of the knife till you could see her knuckles shining white. She looked like she was about to lunge at Ro'. and he just stood as if waiting for an impact. Tearing up, she screamed and threw the knife behind her; thrown with such force that the tip of the blade wedging into the wall of the ship. She tilted her head, looking down, like she was trying to get the voices of screaming out of her head. Finally, she stopped, and looked at Ro' with dark eyes.
"Stay away from me. Just...."
Israna fought back tears and sighed, grabbing her head and shaking. She walked out of the room, punching the wall as she left, leaving a small dent, and went to find Marie.
Ro' watched the human leave before crossing to retrieve the knife buried a quarter inch into the steel plate. He then ran his fingers over the dent she had made. She showed definite potential.
He had never been in danger. She was good, but she wasn't Ship Captain good. For all her lethal ferocity, she had not the focus to be a real issue. She would find her path, or burn herself out trying to out stare the sun.
But perhaps it was best to keep his own involvement in the destruction of her colony a secret for a while longer.
