Forgotten Glory – Ballroom
by HoD Ro' Matlh & Soghla' Terri (Tell) Hope
There is a flash of white light and a ringing noise in Tell's ears. For a moment she is dazed and disoriented, like when she had taken the blow to the head from the leaking conduit.
As her vision began to clear she became aware of points of bright light and the soft hum of a large crowd of people. From somewhere a band started playing.
She slowly realized that she was standing in the middle of some sort of large ballroom, where some very expensive people were mingling and dancing. Some wore dazed expressions, while others went about their socializing with the gay abandon of the rich.
Tell went to move and felt the constriction around her looking down she let a gasp escape her. She was dressed in a fantastic gown that would have made Cinderella weep with joy.
Slender hands with beautifully manicured nails traced the outline of a dress that Tell had never seen the like of before. Her elegant bejeweled fingers lingered on a tight fitting bodice . It should have felt uncomfortable but wasn't, it sparkled as she breathed in and out. Delicate, fine lace straps were just there for decoration rather than to hold up the bodice and added to the whole effect.
Fine folds of dainty lace in the palest of green fell gracefully to the floor and onto shoes that were as light as a feather to wear. She was surprised to find herself wearing earrings and tantalizing tips of fingers touched, what felt like, a light but elaborate necklace.
The whole ensemble suited her colouring perfectly. It curved and shaped her in a way that made her feel like the young woman she was. Tell wanted to see what she looked like in a mirror and she wanted to twirl and feel the dress move with her. But deep down inside, despite everything, she knew this wasn't right.
"Where am I?" she asked herself "and what the hell am I doing here?"
People milled around her and the music started again. Some couples moved tot he center of the room to dance. others moved out of the way, which provided Tell with a better look at the room.
At one end was a raised dais, occupied partially by the small orchestra, and partially by a man in a suit who looked very troubled as he scanned the audience. Behind him the huge curved arch of the building, from floor to 20' ceiling was made of glass panes, providing a great view over the...
Tell squinted into the sky.
Those flashes looked alarmingly like ship weapon fire in orbit. Was there a battle going on somewhere?
She started to make her way across the dance floor which was difficult for her. Wearing high heels
caused her to wobble slightly so it wasn't what one would call an elegant glide. She was heading for the man in the suit.
Just as she got to the middle of the dance flloor someone grabbed her hand and then held her tight in a dance hold. The music started and Tell recognised the music as ‘On the Beautiful Blue Danube’ by Johann Strauss II. It was a waltz and Tell allowed herself to be led around the dance floor by this strange man. Perhaps he had some answers for her.
"What is this place?" she asked him
"Judging from the window, I'd say we are in the East wing," the man said without really looking. He had a strong Russian accent and was far lighter on his feet than Tell. "Which means, unless I miss my guess, that the fellow there is Treman, the Corporate's lead weapons trader, with his next gizmo for the highest bidder. Who do you represent?"
Just as Tell opened her mouth to speak she saw a face in the crowd, just for a moment as she flashed around. She could have sworn it was Marie in a waiters uniform, carrying a covered dish.
Her dance partner spun her round and for a moment she lost track of the woman who looked like her crew mate. The music stopped and he bowed to her, he bowed to her. That had never happened to her before. She had to stop herself from curtsying. Tell thanked him and walked off to see if she could get to Marie who was darting in and out of the crowd.
As Tell looked around she thought about what she had just heard. East wing? Treman? Corporate weapons leader? Who did I represent?"
