Marie's Mind – Priority Repairs
by HoD Ro' Matlh & Soghla' HIchop Matlh & Soghla' Terri (Tell) Hope & Soghla' Marie St. Helene
The bellowing could be heard from decks above and below. HIchop and Tell were trying to yell each other down... again.
With the instability and shift in power it was hard to tell which of them was second officer at any given point. Ro' seemed happy to let them fight it out amongst themselves. HIchop would gladly have sorted the matter on the end of a knife, but that had proved increasingly difficult as Tell had continued to train under Ro' tutorship. Likewise, Tell didn't really want the role enough since it took her away from her engines.
The issue was now one of priority though. There were limited resources to purchase replacement parts, and at the end of the day something would be left behind. Neither Tell, Nor HIchop were willing to make the sacrifice in their department.
"What is wrong with you? With out the relays and power couplings there is not a chance in hell you would be able to fire the damned torpedoes anyway. As always HIchop you keep getting your priorities wrong, you keep missing the point." Tell pointed a finger at him.
HIchop ignored the finger, "Without weapons, there is no point in having a ship! The crew understands this. We are warriors, not weaklings."
"Come on then, I'll take you and the rest of the crew on." Tell argued "My orders were to repair the ship, yet again. The Cap'n said nothing to me about getting Photon torpedoes."
HIchop sneered, "MY orders were to equip the ship with weapons, not to bother with... light globes and hot showers. You have your orders, I have mine. Shall we fight for who gets their way?"
And now here was the worst part of it. As Quartermaster it was Marie's job to sit here and make the final decision. She stood and banged both fists on a crate in front of her. It did not bring silence but it did bring about a noticeable drop in volume.
“HIchop, pull your head in!” she yelled. “You too, Tell.” That brought the silence she wanted.
“Correct me if I’m wrong but I haven’t seen a handy corner store around here just waiting to sell either torpedoes or spares to us. Not at a price we can afford, anyway. That makes stealing them a more likely prospect. Hichop, if you can find somewhere to steal them from, I’m all ears. Until then, the argument is a moot one and I've got better things to do with my time than indulge in it.
“Short version though: without the spares, we'll be fighting with one hand tied behind our back. They blow and it won't matter how many torpedoes we have because the systems won't be available to fire them. If you do find a source, they’re the priority.”
