Cold Realisation – Cold war
by HoD Ro' Matlh & Lieutenant JG Linx Moonshadow & Beq Marcus Quexana & Sogh Germite Ephilom & Soghla' HIchop Matlh & Soghla' Jared & Soghla' Terri (Tell) Hope & Soghla' Marie St. Helene
HIchop, led Germite and Marie quickly out of engineering and back towards the bridge. The remaining three lost no time in preparing.
Tell was hampered by the lack of powered tools, but she soon managed to remove the protective housing of the core's feeder cables. The technology was totally alien to her, but some principles are universal. She soon identified what appeared to be containment units and their interlinks.
May'bel was preparing his explosives; removing the safety switches and priming them to detonate with little prompting. He then carefully placed each of his three fragmentaries against a location Tell nominated for him.
Marcus, meanwhile had been nominated to keep watch. This was nerve wracking. He had his back to some very dangerous explosives, looking for the tiniest movement in the shadows, when every shift of his own body sent shadows dancing and scampering across the walls.
As the trio continued to work, they became aware of a gradual increase in noise. Faint sputtering of control panels, the drip of condensation, the creak of metal as it warmed.
Suddenly Marcus' eyes were drawn to movement. Floating only a foot or so from him was one of the small metal bugs the crew feared so much. It was moving, rotating slowly and waving its legs, as if trying to right itself. At the moment it was drifting in open space unable to propel itself or latch onto anything for grip. But where there was one, there were likely to be more he couldn't see.
"Watch out." warned Tell "Don't let it touch you. I would hate to see you die just when you arrived on the ship." Tell returned to what she was doing and kept her mind focused on the task ahead. The sooner it was done the sooner they could get the hell out of here.
Moments felt like hours as the engineer of the FHew worked against the clock to set the explosives. In her mind she saw the explosion blasting away everything in sight, obliterating every single trace of the horror that had taken place here.
The last wire in place she signaled to the others.
"All set here," she told them. "Lets do this."
May'bel nodded and pulled her aside reaching for the pins, "Once I pull the first pin we have seven seconds. Radio the FHew and tell them to move. Once this goes, there will be no hiding from that fleet anyway."
"Tell to FHew," said the engineer calmly. "Get going."
"Hold tight, team," Came the response. "We are running a cold reboot now. We will pull you out if we can."
Tell knew she was going to die. The engines would be warm in moments but a full reboot of peripherals like transporters would take more than an minute, not to mention achieving a lock on the trio. There would be no cheating death this time round as she had done so many times before. She couldn't see past this point, she couldn't visulise being with the rest of the crew. Despite everything she counted herself lucky and called herself the best engineer in the fleet.
May'bel caught her look and nodded again. He understood the look of resignation she wore. He began to pull the pins. Tell caught herself counting under her breath and waited for the obligatory white light that precedes death.
