Resistance is Futile – Resistance is imperative

The crew quickly moved to the Bridge and assumed their positions. Ro' took the Command chair. Behind his left shoulder HIchop took tactics till Thor'nan woke. Behind him, at the triple stations for Engineering, Damage Control and Life Support, stood Tell, unable to get into her beloved engineering, and a somewhat flustered Marla, embarrassed at having missed all that had happened so far.
Over Ro's right shoulder Marie took helm. Behind her was Jared balancing his time between Science, Computer Control and Operations.
In front of the bridge Germite manned communications while 'Iw'a'na' manned navigation.
The front view screen showed a long range display of what seemed to be a collection of ships of various sizes and shapes. All were reading as having Borg Tech.
"We are entering close range now, HoD."
Suddenly the ship dropped out of warp. At the same moment all of the weapons, command systems, shields, helm and drive control came back on line. sensors showed that the Borg around the ship had suddenly beamed off.
"Status!" Ro' demanded.
Jared's eyes were wide.
"Computer response time is down to a third of what it was. And sensors are detecting particles and spectrums klingon science doesn't know about yet."
Tag: everyone can report some enhancement to the systems they are managing.
Germite touched his earpiece. It was actually rather odd. Previously, on this vessel where he had sat in at the communications console, it had been rather staticy and garbled. This was crystal clear. He noticed on his console that it was also converting the transmissions to text, identifying the race and ship that was transmitting and translated it all into
Federation Standard. He wondered if the readout would change depending on the operator. "There's a lot of subspace chatter. A lot of different languages."
"Engine room reading, well I don't know what its reading because I'm not down there, but it seems to be operating at 100% efficiency," Tell said with disgust. "Same goes for damage control and life support." Now what was she going to fix? Damn Borg always wanting perfection. What happened to good old fashioned blood sweat and tears?
Marie studied the information that helm control was providing. It made no sense. That is, it made perfect sense expect that it shouldn’t be possible. What the...has happened to this console, she thought. She felt an urgent need to give it a good thump. I swear if I so much as twitch my finger I could send us careening off into deep space. I’ve never seen the controls so responsive.
She input an experimental command. The ship lurched to starboard. Now that’s interesting. I could have sworn I input a turn to port. Let’s see.... She input a command to turn to port. Sure enough, the ship turned to starboard. OK. Maybe the Borg aren’t as good as they think they are. Maybe their systems are configured differently to ours. Whatever.... I’ll just have to keep on my toes. Now...I wonder what other little quirks this new system has up its sleeve?
She busied herself exploring the nuances of a helm which threatened to hold some interesting surprises.
HIchop reported, "I am reading Borg weapons fire!"
"On Screen!" Ro' bellowed.
The image on the front screen resolved itself. Instead of a fleet of Borg ships this is what they saw.
In the centre was a Borg cube. Around it was a cloud of smaller ships; Federation, Gorn, Romulan, Ferrengi, Tholian, Breen, Cardassian, Lyann, as well as many they did not recognise, and a myriad of small Borg ships. Everything was firing at the Borg cube."
Ro's eyes narrowed as he saw something, "Magnify sector 5-32."
A small section of the Borg cube enlarged to display an anomaly; a strange grey shape was jutting out of the Cube. Already other shapes could be seen forming elsewhere on the cube.
"Is that...?" 'Iw'a'na' asked shocked.
Jared noded, unable to say it aloud.
"The Nihlus are assimilating the Borg."
"Isn't that what we all want, right?" asked Tell "I mean we hate the Borg, right? I don't know about anyone else but I can't see a problem with that, right. I for once won't miss them."
Jared looked at her blankly.
"Wolves are bad news. Plague is worse news. Wolves with plague are not good news."
"The Borg have responded to an overpowering threat by rather creatively making it everyone's problem. And they've managed just that. If the Nihlus win a fleet battle this size, the resulting fleet would be practically unstoppable."
Ro' rumbled from the command chair, "Loving the sound of that 'if', Jared."
"A fleet that big would need an armada to wipe out, and would have city-harvesting capabilities."
"There's also ships here from more than nine major races. This fleet would tag every one of those as a priority threat, and lock into high-activity mode until each and every one of those races was purged. And if that sounds over-ambitious, it's only because you don't know the Nihlus yet."
"Just thinking out loud Jared, just thinking out loud" replied Tell going back to looking at panels again. She noticed a slight drop in readings on life support. Probably nothing to worry about but she thought to keep an eye on it.
Ro's turn to think aloud, "This is why we have not been assimilated. Assimilation takes time and resources. They do not have time to fully integrate us. Right now though, we are fighting ready and with a history of killing Borg."
'Iw'a'na' turned in his chair to face the Captain, "So, what do we do?"
Ro' smiled and rose form his chair, "How is that even a question. WE FIGHT!"
"Forward shields to full, weapons train on those Nhilus protrusions. Helm take us in!"
And so the Battle of Nine Fleets was joined.
