The crew were gathered in the mess hall. It was designed for a crew of twelve and things were cramped with sixteen on board. There was a general festive air about. The crew were pleased with their time off ship, but glad to be back and underway.
Ro' stood on a table so all could see him, a hot mug in his hand and raised his arms for silence.
"Friends!" he began and waited while the cheer died down. "Friends, we are ready once more. The ship's aches have been tended, as I am sure have some of your aches."
He took a long draught as some of the crew jostled and leered at Tierk and Marla who returned the jeers good naturedly.
"Not mine! My wife is..Formidable! " yelled Tierk.
Marla just looked at her new husband, and smiled.
"Now we depart..." Ro' began then suddenly looked at his cup. He frowned and glanced around for Marie. Finding her he simply asked, "NIt'a?"
Marie cast him a look as if to ask 'what else would I purchase?' For the benefit of the rest of the crew however she deigned to reply. “After our recent misadventures, I thought that something a bit better than the usual swill was in order. Don't drink it all at once.”
Ro' nodded and took another long and appreciative swig before continuing, "We are ready to go out on Patrol. Starfleet has asked us to visit a region along their neutral zone with the Romulans, figuring we will cause less offence than one of their ships. There are a few refurbishments, Tell will alert you to anything you need to know. Apparently even the light in the hold is working now."
A snort of laughter and a derisive comment came from the direction of the Chief Engineer. The damn light in the hold had long since been a bugbear of hers.
"I must be on the wrong ship," Ru'fimohp quipped to general laughter. Ro' waved to Tell to give her a chance to update them on anything relevant.
"Apart from the 'go faster' stripes on the hull were in pretty good shape for once. I'll let you have the updates soon."
"We also have a real doctor," Ro' waved towards Germite, "Try not to break this one. I've told him he will get bored with my crew; there will be nothing for him to do. Doctor, are you going to insist on medicals or anything like that?"
"I'll let him examine me if he has warm hands," Cha'a' purred.
Germite rolled his eyes at Cha'a's comment. "In my experience, the Klingon physiology is rather resilient. I see no need to conduct a routine medical exam on each Klingon. I would like to examine those that have been injured or have chronic ailments."
Cha'a' growled and adjusted her ample bodice, "I've got this chronic ailment right here."
More cat calls and derisive comments. Marie groaned theatrically.
Ro' put down his mug, "I want us underway in an hour. Jason, what is our ETA, best speed, for the Neutral Zone?"
"At warp 7, we'll reach the neutral zone in 5 hours...." Jason said briefly. He still found it best to say only what was necessary."
"Thor'nan, May'bel, HIchop. I want you on the bridge on first shift. Any questions?"
Good, Marie thought. I can do with a bit more sleep. They can do without me while we get underway. Then I'll get the rest of the supplies inventoried and stowed away properly.
"Then don't just stand there, get moving!" Ro' roared in mock anger. The crew began to disperse.
In Jared's room, in a quiet alcove near his bed, a small device sat quietly. It had sat dormant for longer than even Jared could properly remember. Now a small light turned on and off.
This quiet, inauspicious flashing light was the only herald to the end of the Klingon Empire.
