Re-born – To Borg or not to Borg

Marie watched dumbfounded as testosterone fuelled men reached for their weapons before their brains could even kick into gear. As one, they reacted to the implant as a threat. Yes, it was that but that – in and of itself – did not make Hope a threat.
“Wait! she yelled in the most commanding voice she could muster. A part of her noticed that even Ro' paused. She noted that and moved on; she did not have time to congratulate herself. “That implant isn't a death sentence – not for us and certainly not for Hope. We have the technology; we can rebuild. Hope is young. Something went wrong here. The Borg put youths in maturation chambers until they're adults. That means she's not fully assimilated yet.”
She turned towards the Interrogation Officer. “Hichop, you might not be the best surgeon in the fleet but I'll help you. If we're careful, we can remove most of the nanites. We can get enough out to bring Hope back from assimilation. I'll get the necessary information on what to do even if I have to hack into confidential Starfleet records to do so, though I doubt it will come to that. Icheb is not the only Borg child to be rescued.”
She looked down at the comatose girl. “I won't lie to you; it won't be easy. You'll sleep during the procedure so you won't feel a thing. When you wake up, you'll be the same old Hope but you won't have the nasty bugs in your blood trying to turn you into something horrible.”
"I would still recommend keeping a weapon on her at all times. I don't want her assimilating the ship. " said Thor'nan.
"Agreed," said May'Bel, his disruptors still trained on the girl.
"I don't know. Part of me says yes keep a weapon on her at all times. The other part of me is screaming she's only a child. I don't think there is need for a weapon to be be on her. Even with Borg enhanced strength she wouldn't be a match for any of us." Jason said voicing his opinion and his conflict.
Ro' Finally spoke, "No."
He looked at Marie, "We don't have the facilities on board to do the sort of operation you are expecting. even with the Federation toys HIchop has collected, he has no actual medical training. He is an orderly. If you truly wish to save her we must get her to the Federation as soon as possible."
He turned to Jason, "Increase to Warp 7. Jared, what is the nearest Federation ship?"
Jared did a quick check, "The Hermes is close, but she is civilian. The Jericho is on the Neutral Zone. The Acheron could intercept with us in 28 hours."
Ro' nodded, "Contact them and set and intercept course."
He turned to the rest of the crew, "What we have here is a Federation citizen. She is not a prisoner of War. She is an ally in need of assistance. Which of you warriors will kill her in cold blood?"
His eye met every other eye on the Bridge.
"I wouldn't hurt a child. As much as I want to wipe out the Borg I wouldn't hurt a child. I will however re double my efforts to exterminate the Borg for what they have done to this Girl." Jason said matter of factly. He now had another person to get revenge for and he would stop at nothing to get his revenge.
"Nor should you," he agreed. "The Initial stage of Borg assimilation is taking control of the victims body. It does not affect their minds at all. She is still a little girl in all senses of the word. However, those nanites will try and take control of her. There is no telling what they will do this far from any other Borg. They may remain dormant, or they may try to connect to the collective and summon help. We shall be rid of her before it comes to that, one way or another."
Then he turned to Marie, "Find a place in the Hold to make her comfortable. Keeping her sedated is not ideal. Humans do not cope well. May'bel, arrange a 24 hour guard over her. Everyone can take a few hours."
Ro' leaned in close to Thor'nan, so only he could hear, "If she converts, or begins to assimilate any member of crew or part of this ship. You space her. Purge the hold and anyone in it if need be. Then we turn the ship around and finish the job with disruptor fire. Understood?"
"Yes sir," said Thor'nan. He wasn't sure if he could do such a thing. He had two children himself, one of them not much older than the girl. But he answered in the affirmative, hoping it wouldn't come to that.
"I would also recommend jamming all outgoing frequencies, in case she does convert and tries to contact the collective," he said as an afterthought.
"Agreed," Ro' nodded to turning to the science station, "Jared, set up some sort of... Where is Jared?"
No one had noticed the Vetus leave.
