Re-born – Pulled from the wreck

Technically this area of space belong to no one. It was closest to Klingon space but they did not claim it as theirs. The Federation, Romulans and various pirate groups travelled it regularly. The Fairchild had been an Oberth class on a science and supply mission from the Federation to one of the outlying Klingon Colonies. It had never reached it's destination.
As the FHew approached its sensors picked up very faint weapon signature from the Fairchild's defensive systems. The hulk itself was all but stripped bare. Whole sections of ship had been carved away as if with a scalpel.
Jared checked his findings, "I am reading only 72% of the mass that should be present in this sort of wreck. Something has been salvaging parts."
Thor'nan reported, "There are no other vessels showing on sensors."
Ro' ordered, "Keep the shields up and weapons on ready. When we get close scan for life pods or other survivors."
Jason didn't like what he saw. He quickly started making sure that if they needed to get out of there in a hurry they could. When he took a closer look at the wreckage he shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Anything that could do that to a ship is terrifying. The only other thing I've seen able to do that was a Borg ship." He thought to himself as he wasn't ready to share any concerns about what did this until they found out at least a little more.
Jared tapped a few keys, scanning for exotic energy signatures. He'd done some... work... on the F'Hew's sensors during the refit, and was keen to test them out. Some still needed adjustment.
It wasn't that he'd kept the upgrades SECRET exactly. He'd definitely mentioned wanting to rig up a quantum resonator, an etheric phase tracer and a few other bits and pieces to Ro. And the captain had definitely said "Yes, whatever! Just make the sensors work!"
He MIGHT have made sure he asked when Ro was in the middle of an argument with Marie about cargo space and house Matlh property. But he'd asked, and Ro had said yes. That was the important thing.
Truth be told this screamed Borg. The angle of the cuts suggested a smaller vessel but... yep, there was the tell tale Borg Footprint all over the hulk.
"Well... the readings I'm getting look like Borg to me. Which seems a little odd. They were mostly a Delta quadrant species, last I knew."
"Smaller ship. Possibly one of their scout spheres."
Once they had found the Borg 'footprint' Jason's mind started running through all his strategies. All the attack positions. How best to destroy them etc. "Sir" Jason began as he turned to Ro'. "I think some of my strategies may be of use here."
Ro' frowned, "In dealing with a debris field? You have specialist search and rescue training as well, ensign?"
"No...Well a little S&R basic training at the academy. But, I was referring to the Borg footprint. In case they're still around."
Ro' staid very still for a moment then leant forward in his chair gazing intently at Jason, "The Borg? The Borg who wiped out almost all of Starfleet with a single ship, not once, but twice? Are you recommending we should consider engaging them in a fifty year old, recently written off B'rel scout?"
"I'm not saying we should fight them, sir. I'm saying I know their methods. I know how they'll act and what they'll do for the most part. Head to head we would lose to a Cube. A Sphere on the other hand we could possibly survive. But, what I was talking about was evading them. We just got the FHew back and she still has most of her new systems untested."
Ro' leaned back in the chair, "Jared. If there is ANY sign of another vessel Borg or otherwise, I want the cloak up. If it is a Borg, Ensign Hawk, you have my standing order to get us the Qu'vatlh away at Warp 9 or better."
"Aye sir. Not reading anything at the moment, but I'll keep an eye out for transwarp signatures."
Marla nodded, and went off to do her one duty aboard the ship, and stood by the cloak machine waiting to turn it on when she was given the order to.
Hichop looked up, "I have found a life sign. There is an escape pod bearing 20 mark 5, range 24,000 kelicams. It is still just outside transporter range. One single Human life sign, but failing."
"Looks like someone got away," Jared commented cheerfully.
Ro' snarled, "Passenger service, AGAIN!"
He stabbed a finger on the comms to get through to the ship's internal comms, "Marie, HIchop. Get to the transporter and beam that survivor on board. Give me an update when we have them."
He moved forward to beside Jason and said quietly, "As soon as Jared's scans are complete and the survivor is on board get us out of here. Set course for the nearest Federation planet or starbase where we can drop the Human."
