Ro' strode onto the Bridge. He did not look happy.
"Listen up!" he bellowed to the gathered Beqs and officers. "There are a few changes to be made. Since our Romulan XO has left us for a time, I need a new one. Starfleet has asked, as part of our ongoing affiliation with Bravo Fleet, that it be a Human. I only have two humans left on this ship. Leah has stayed behind when she heard we were heading to Klingon space for more crew. Apparently there are too many 'unfriendlies' there for her. So!"
He turned to Hope and St. Helene, "Just so it doesn't seem like I am playing favourites; Sogh'la Tell, you now have the Job of XO, and Sogh Marie, you are now our Helm officer. Don't mistake these postings as an invitation. Those are the roles you will now fill, and learn to fill them well, because every BeQ on this ship is now watching to see you slip up so they can replace you."
He glared around the rest of the assembled crew as if inviting anyone to challenge his decision."
Tell was about to say something but found she couldn't and mumbled something unintelligible at first. "So does this mean I get a pay rise then?" she asked eventually and smiled sardonically. What next she thought is he going to throw at us but she nodded her thanks to him. "Were's my job description then."
TAG:
"Helm, Set Course to qabang'NiS, cruise speed. Marla has been asked to partake in a Human grieving ritual. in three days."
Helm! Marie thought. I'll bet the Klingon bastard knew this was coming. That's why he promoted me, so that he could shove me into this position. What do I know about Helm?
Her mind raced as she tried to remember such lessons as she'd had back on Nouvelle Nouvelle Calédonie. The gangs never had the resources for anything beyond little flyers. She wasn't in Starfleet long enough to be let loose on a real ship but she had done a few simulations.
During the lost decade between being kicked out of Starfleet and joining the FHew she occasionally had to pilot a ship. Nothing fancy and certainly nothing as big as a B'rel class but substantial enough to learn the basics maintaining position and cruise speed.
OK, you've got me for the moment. You expect me to fail and you're just dying to see one of your Klingon cronies try to take me down. I'll show you. I'll make this Helm sing!
YIghegh appeared at her shoulder and leaned in as if to criticise her, but instead he whispered ever so softly, "This control converts figures from Romulan to Klingon, or Human. Keep the Starboard thruster up, she tends to list to that side."
To Marie's shock the Klingon was helping her. Before she could respond he moved back to his post.
"Thank you," she said anyway. Then she realised that that was probably the most civil thing she'd ever said to a Klingon. It was also the first time she'd been genuinely thankful to someone in a very long time.
"Any other tips you'd care to...I need to know?" she amended quickly.
"Just don't break the ship," replied Tell. "We're running out of duct tape faster then you have had hot dinners."
That quip was just the thing Marie needed. "Considering that most of the dinners around here are served cold and alive then there's probably not too much duct tape on offer. Lucky you've got me around to procure some."
It was all she needed. It was not as if the controls fell into place under her fingers.... That sort of thing only happens in science fiction holonovels, she thought. But the experiences and training in her past did certainly come back to her. "qabang'NiS it is..." She swallowed hard before adding"...Ro'. Cruise speed as ordered."
