Two months after Pel'oc Rot, the FHew left DS 15 for open space. The coordinates they were given were exact, but lead to no system or other phenomenon. It was literally an open stretch of unremarkable space. Here they were to collect a Federation Engineer and return him to the station. The F'Hew could do much faster speeds than any shuttle craft, and there were no other large craft free to make the journey.
Naturally this put Ro' in a foul mood and the crew had been avoiding him for the two day trip. Eventually though Leah reported they were approaching the coordinates and everyone was required on the bridge. Ro' arrived last. He threw himself into his command chair and grunted.
"Bring us out of warp."
Hay'legh obeyed and the front viewscreen displayed a vista of unremarkable stars.
"Jared, scan for the Federation transport."
The Vetus gave a quick look but the craft was easy to find, "A standard Type 6, bearing 15 mark 25. Two humans aboard."
The view screen panned right and down to see the tiny white spot approaching.
"Marie, go to the transporter and preapare to bring our...guest aboard."
He glanced at Tactical. HIchop was manning it for a change, having lost a bet with May'bel. "Keep the shields down for transport. Hail the Federation ship."
Tell was manning Comms since there was little to do in engineering on such a standard flight. She had just managed to get a channel open when she heard Jared next to her mumble, "That's... odd...."
Suddenly the front viewpanel was filled with the image of a Romulan D'deridex class warbird decloaking.
Marla was standing near her friend, Tell. She stood staring at the screen in front of her, very much confused as to why there was a Romulan ship here.
Leah blinked pausing for just a moment trying to make out the distorted green haze untill the warbird came into focus. Leah quickly checked the coordinates again to verify they where exactly where she had intended and sure enough, they where. This was not Romulan space and a lone warbird out here made no sense. She started plotting in course ajustment vectors for escape routes just in case, knowing it was little more than a futile effort with Ro' in command. Leah was almost betting there might be at least one more ship they were not seeing out there.
Tell looked at the screen as the Warbird came sharply into view. It didn't make sense. Why were they here?
"Well this is going to put a token shadow on the dim sunshine of our day." retorted Tell "Who the hell invited them to the party?"
She listened out for anything that was coming in from the other ship that made the FHew look like an insignificant bug ready and waiting to be squashed. There was nothing and Tell's mind raced back to her engine room and was going through numerous steps on how to 'sweeten' the power supply so they would be out of the area at a moment's notice. She didn't intend to get caught in the crossfire.
Hay'Legh pursed her lips. What is the Rhai'hlan doing here?
Her hands slowly and carefully formed into fists, knuckles showing white against her olive skin, and Hay’Legh had to stomp down hard on the urge to send the F’Hew directly into an attack run. A B’Rel cannot stand head to head against a D.deridex class warbid and come out of the encounter intact.
But the Rhai'hlan would not be here without Him and no ship deserved to have a walking corpse at the helm.
She cocked her head to get a glimpse of the Captain’s reaction, in the vain hope that he would react like a typical Klingon….
Ro' noticed his first officer's reaction and his eyes narrowed.
"They are powering weapons!" Jared warned.
Tell left the Comms station and switched over to engineering on the next panel. She had made some adjustments to the engine room over the last couple of months and one was an Alpha Wave field generator that would give added protection to her precious engine. She acquired it from her ex boss Malkie who had been on DS15 doing trade . He was a handy person to have around at times. She brought the extra piece of kit on line, though she had her doubts if the Fhew could out run a Rommie ship with out the duct tape ripping the hull apart at the seams. There was a slight spike in power but nothing to worry about it was all well with in normal levels. She had a vision of the FHew being destroyed and her pampered engine sailing off into the sunset of some godforsaken moth ball of a planet. The only thing left of a once proud rusted bucket full of bolts.
"Engine room on standby to fly by the seat of our pants out of here if necessary." She informed Ro'
Marla looked at Tell, "Did you want me to head down to the Engine Room and help down there, or did you need my help up here?"
"I'll go down to the Engine Room" replied Tell "You might be needed for the Cloak."
'Run from Romulans' Hichop thought to himself with a chuckle. Tell clearly forgot what ship she was on and who was commanding it. 'Besides Romulans always have weapons at ready when they come across other ships. And so should we' he thought to himself before realising he had got carried away in thought and forgot he was on tactical. "Qu'vatlh! Captain, The Romulans are clearly not interested in us else they would have fired already" he said to buy some time "however weapons are powered up and at your command". He tried to stay focused on the situation but was now wondering if anyone actually noticed his pause.
It was at this point the Romulans opened fire. As HIchop had guessed it was not at the Fhew, but at the Federation shuttle which evaporated under the concentrated disruptor fire. A second later the ship began to move away and cloak.
What the hell had just happened? thought Tell. One minute there and the next minute gone. What were Rommies doing in this space and blowing up a Federation vessel. What was going on? "I'm in the engine room" she told no one in particular.
Marla had heard her, and she took Tell's seat on the Bridge waiting to be asked to do something.
"Hold there!" Ro' barked. He turned to Jared. "Any survivours? were the humans beamed aboard the Romulan shuttle before hand?"
Jared just shook his head.
Ro' glanced at Hayley then stood, turning on the ship's intercom, "All Beq's Report to the Bridge. Senior Staff, Report to the Conference room in 2 minutes."
Hichop looks to his panel as he stands to move to the conference room. "Ah" he things to himself. As he walks into the conference room he looks to Ro'. "Sir, I have an initial analysis of the debris field. It contains biological matter, enough for two life forms. I could run a DNA test of some samples to confirm the identities".
Ro' nods, "Bring the results with you when you have them."
