Marla was born on the planet Earth, but when her mother died during her birth, her father took her back to the Klingon planet of Qu'onos. Growing up she found that she had a knack for mechanics, and trained as an Engineer. When she was older she decided to go back to her mother's home planet of Earth, and she joined Starfleet as an engineer specifically for Klingon warbirds in Starfleet. She hoped this would make both of her parents proud of her.
