Marie's Mind – Merry Crimbo
by Soghla' Terri (Tell) Hope
"Is that thing on?" she asked
"Yes it is" I sighed. Tell still didn't trust me to use the camera on her. She is such a control freak and wants to do everything her own way. Never mind I hopefully won't be here for much longer the editor wants me to cover another story on some derelict space station somewhere.
"Be careful of the cables on the floor and watch you don't touch the cage on the top of my work top it bites."
"I'm aware of the cables and the thing that bites now can we start?" I asked slightly miffed
"Mmmm" Tell replied rubbing her teeth with her fingers and then running her tongue over them "I haven't got anything stuck on my teeth have I? Wouldn't like anyone to see that. What was it were doing again."
"Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas Tell and you could say something about being together as a crew for four years."
"FOUR YEARS!, really four years? It's longer than that surely, are you sure? Such a lot has happened in those four years I can tell you. Though I suppose you know all about that don't you after all you are a writer."
Tell adjusted her uniform, fiddled with her hair, tweaked her sort of makeshift chair that was really an upturned bin. "Ok, ok I'm ready. Oh just one more thing..."
"No Tell there isn't any more time."
The reporter could tell that the fiesty Chief Engineer of the Fhew was just playing for time, perhaps she would have a coffee with her before she left. "Just look at the red dot on the camera. and 3 2 1 and go."
Tells eyes appeared brighter than normal on the screen and underneath that harshness and bravado there was an ordinary likable petite woman and pretty with it. Her face lit up the screen. Though the reporter wouldn't tell her that but she would write it.
"Its been a great year so far on this rust bucket that we all call a ship. Its been good working with you all and your not a bad crew to hang around with even if the Cap'n keeps breaking the ship faster than I can repair it. At least my engine room manages to stay in one piece most of the time.
Well its Christmas time once more and a time of peace aboard this ship for a little while at least until the Cap'n thinks otherwise. I'd like to say a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of us here on this bucket of bolts we call home. But we wouldn't trade it for any other ship in the Fleet.
I look forward to see what the next year brings us and perhaps some of you out there will want to join us. But beware this ship is not for the feint hearted the Cap'n is picky about who he takes on.
Last but not least to the Captain of the Fhew and the entire crew, its an honor and a privilege to serve with all of you.... Where's my glass Joan? My glass? No not that one... that one. A Christmas toast to all of us and may we all look forward to the adventures to come in the next year ahead."
Tell finished her drink and raised an empty glass to the screen and was about to call cut.
"Wait, wait. Joan don't turn it off come and say a Merry Christmas too."
"No its ok Tell this is your thing the message is from you."
Before I could say anything Tell got out of her chair and dragged me in front of the camera. "You know you want to." she told me and so I reluctantly gave in and sat sharing the seat looking into the camera.
"Hi Thorin, Craig, Lochy, Paul, Alastair, Becky and any others that I might have missed out. Its been another great year on the Fhew. I love being part of this ship its such good fun to play Tell. Its good to know that we are always there for each other and support each other through the good times and the trying times.
Have a lovely Christmas and an even better new year for once a writer on the Fhew always a writer. Tells filled my glass with something pink and sparkly so I will raise my glass and finish with 'To us'.
"Was that ok Tell?"
"Yep fine."
"Just fine not great."
"It was fine, though your punctuation is terrible. I've been meaning to have a word with you about that for some time."
"I'm not bovered, am I bovered? Its the writing that counts, anyway I have a Punctuation Fairy to help me."
We both laughed together and walked out of engineering. "C'mon Joan we have a party to go to and if your very good and you promise to write me a really good part in the next mission, I'll let you press the button that sets off the indoor fireworks in the mess hall."
"Indoor fireworks? Isn't that a bit dangerous?" I asked
She just smirked the way Tell usually does and replied "Don't know. Your the one who's going to write it Joan"
