In the belly of the Whale – The Party's Over
by Soghla' Terri (Tell) Hope & Sogh Marla Varquis
Tell staggered slightly on the way back to her quarters in her hands she cradled the pretty little horse. On the whole it hadn't been a bad night as nights went. She could do with a shower though.
Marla was just ahead of her.
'Marla do you read?' asked Tell
Marla turned to Tell, "Yes I do, why do you ask?"
'I like to read before I go to sleep, it helps to switch my mind off ' replied Tell 'I didn't want to keep you awake if I have my light on'
"Oh no, I will be fine. Once I get into a book nothing gets my mind off of it, except of course the call for to come on duty."
Tell laughed she was like that as well, there was nothing like the feel of a book in her hands. One day though when she had some time off she would like to try a holonovel. Perhaps she might be able to persuade Marla to try one on their next leave.
'What are you reading?' she asked as they turned to go into their quarters.
"It is a book called 'Blacksun' about a guy who is a space ninja pirate captain. It is a very good book What are you reading?"
'Blacksun, sounds good.' replied Tell 'I'm reading an old story called 'Jane Eyre' ever heard of it?'
"I have. I hear it is good. I have really seen only the old movies."
'Have you seen the very old black and white one, its very atmospheric' Tell asked her as they walked into there quarters.
"I have not seen those, the ones I saw were in color." She followed Tell into the room.
The room was sparse but adequate with bunk beds set against the left side of the wall with a couple of shelves and cupboards that Tell had welded against the other side for storage. The shower that had been fitted was to the rear of the room.
Marla walked up to her shelf and grabbed her book. She went and put it on her bed, and went to change into a clean uniform.
Tell took her time in the shower grateful that she had managed to talk Ro into installing one. Her water recycling unit was almost ready to be installed she might be able to take an extra shower then. She stood and closed her eyes for a while enjoying the heat and the steam that was cleansing her skin as well as her thoughts. She had gone to far in the training fight with Ro she hadn't expected the knife to go in and she deserved what she got. Her mind went over her moves, he was right speed was her greatest asset she had to get faster and learn to duck too. Her skin, though healed by the dermal regenerator, still felt tender to the touch as she dried herself and put on vest and shorts.
Tell refused to sleep in her uniform, as most Klingons did, but she laid it out in a way that took a minimal effort to get ready if she needed to be in a hurry. She looked at the pictures on her wall, she had managed to draw the faces of her four brothers to remind herself never to forget them.
She picked up her book and started to read, Jane Eyre , she was leaving Lowood for Thornfield.
Marla sat down in her bed, and pulled out her book. "So I forget who wrote Jane Eyre?"
'Charlotte Brontë.' replied Tell 'It was published in London, England in 1847, would you like to read it when I've finished?'
"Sure, and you can read mine when I am done." She opened it. It was almost her favorite part, and it happened to be one of those books that she kept reading.
'that would be great' replied Tell glad that she had found a friend in Marla and could share her love of books with someone. 'So who wrote your book then, would I recognise the author?'
"I don't know. She is not really a well known author. Her name is Becky Crass, and all her books are really good. Have you heard of her?"
'Mmm I have heard of her but I havent read her books, but would love to read yours when you have finished it'
replied Tell 'I have a joke for you its called the Four Engineers'
One day, a Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Chemical Engineer and Computer Engineer were flying in a shuttle down the street.
The shuttle broke down.
The Mechanical Engineer said, "I think a rod broke."
The Chemical Engineer said, "The way it sputtered at the end, I don't think it's getting feul."
The Electrical Engineer said, "I think there was a spark and something is wrong with the electrical system."
All three turned to the computer engineer and said, "What do you think?"
The Computer Engineer said, "I think we should all get out and get back in."
Marla laughed. This joke made so much sense to her, and she would probably retell it to someone later. "That was good. When I think of one I will tell you, but I am so tired I can't think of one."
'Good night then Marla' said Tell yawning
"Night." She opened back up her book, and started reading.
