Lest we forget... – Those Damn Lights
by Soghla' Marie St. Helene & Soghla' Terri (Tell) Hope
I suppose Matlh thinks if he makes me clean up, I’ll expose my stashes, Marie thought as she ambled off down the corridor towards the nearest cargo bay. You’ve got another think coming, Klingon!
Cleaning up was easy. It was drudge work but that’s all anything ever came down to on this heap. Marie knew she couldn’t physically challenge the Klingons but there were many other way to advance her position. Then there was that wet-behind-the-ears Trill, Jrez. No wonder he’d not risen beyond a non-com! The proposition he put forward was simplicity itself but he made it sound so complex. As for the sort of payment he was talking about....she stood to make a fortune even before she skimmed off the surface. Ah, but life is good. I lost on Ubatti but it wasn’t all that much. I’ll soon have it back again.
OOC: My thought is that Marie finds Tel in the cargo bay and we go from there.
Tell had one final rant "What is it with you? You old witch, why don't you......." Tell turned sharply when she heard a noise behind her, it was the quartermaster. "That wasn't aimed at you Marie." shrugged Tell and muttered something about the relays.
“I should hope not!” Marie snarled. “Who are you to call me old! Give me a hand clearing this deck, will you?”
Tell who was halfway up a ladder at the time stopped and looked down at the Quartermaster then let her breath out very slowly before she answered. "I don't think I heard you properly Marie. Are you asking me to do your job as well as my own?" Tell continued to climb as she waited for an answer until she reached the troublesome relay.
“Get the deck cleared then we’ll have some space to work in. I’ll help you work your way back through the circuits so we can get the fault properly repaired rather than the patch jobs you’ve been doing for the past few weeks. Believe me, I’m just as sick of the lack of decent lighting as you are.”
That was twice that Marie had ordered her to do something and then insulted her work. Did she not think that Tell had already checked the circuits and that the fault was caused by something else. There was also something else going on here so Tell came down the ladder and picked up the overly large brush standing up against the bulkhead. A quartermaster only has two sizes of everything Tell thought and they are either too big or too small. With the brush in her hand she walked towards Marie and stopped two paces in front of her. Marie was a good 6 inches taller than Tell and all her instincts screamed out at the engineer telling her not to trust the Quartermaster.
"Tell me" she asked keeping her eyes on Marie "What's a Quartermaster doing being interested in the work of a Chief engineer?"
“Nothing,” Marie replied curtly. “All I’m interested in is having enough light to get my job done properly. But I’ve worked on enough undermanned vessels to pick up a few tricks. I’m not going to tell you how to do your job but I can be of assistance. I promise you I won’t tread on your toes.”
Tell let the brush fall against the table and reached for her engineering tricorder, a handy piece of equipment she had managed to get hold of from their time on the Arcadia.
She showed the results to Marie.
"I have checked and replaced the damaged and worn systems back to here." explained Tell and went on in more detail "I think the main problem is here" she indicated "At this junction, were the relay buffers and the primary indicators are. Though why on Earth they would have them there I don't know. Something is stopping the power form getting through. To get to it though we have to crawl. I think Starfleet called it a Jefferies tube."
